Our Cause
On January 6, 2009, a great man and a great Dallas Police Officer was taken from us. Senior Corporal Norman Smith was shot and killed in the line of duty. Corporal Smith, along with several members of the Dallas Police Gang Unit, was serving an arrest warrant when suspects fired their guns towards the doorway. Smith, ever the leader, was standing at the door when he was struck.
Norm’s life, and the lives of all fallen officers, will not be forgotten. The honor, duty, and courage of these protectors of our community should forever be recognized. We have come together with Norm’s comrades in the Dallas Police Department in an effort to memorialize this outstanding individual.
We host the annual “Big Russian Shootout” – the Norman Smith Memorial Basketball Tournament - every spring. The 3 v 3 basketball tournament is open to members of law enforcement: local police, sheriffs, federal agents, and prosecutors.
Norm was a great man. We look to honor his memory and those who have sacrificed so much for our community.
